Internet Contrasts and Alcatel-Lucent
help "kids of all ages" at Morgan's Wonderland

Alcatel-Lucent's switches enabled Morgan's Wonderland to achieve this comprehensive coverage while keeping both construction and operating costs down and delivering excellent network fault-tolerance, by allowing Internet Contrasts to install an Ethernet ring protection network rather than traditional hub-and-spoke cabling, based on a ring of twelve strands of fiber laid around the park.

"We sought bids for the fiber install for both traditional hub-and-spoke and Ethernet ring protection topologies. The hub-andspoke configuration would have cost $750,000 compared with around $200,000 for the Ethernet ring protection configuration," Zumwalt says. "We were able to save half a million dollars just in fiber and labor by using Alcatel-Lucent switches. "Making use of Ethernet ring protection has also allowed Internet Contrasts to create a fault-tolerant network that delivers excellent uptime. "If the park suffers a cut in its fiber line or a switch needs to be taken down for maintenance, the park's data and voice traffic still flows around the other side of the ring," Zumwalt explains. "The systems suffer no packet loss and there's no interruption of service to end users. All the phones, alarm systems, lighting controls, park exhibits, cameras: everything stays up without any degradation of service." read more +

Morgan's Wonderland Amusement Park

Don't ever let it be said that relationships don't matter. Internet Constrasts won the park project because it had done some previous work for the park's developer, who was a home builder and had started several other profit and non-profit organizations himself, Zumwalt said. "Someone on his advisory council asked us to take a look at what they were [planning]. They were having issues with distance and they needed a network. They didn't understand the distance problems with Ethernet. We looked at their site plan, got rough estimates and told them they needed fiber optics to go from Point A to Point B."read more +

Internet Contrasts Tackles
Tough Video Surveillance Project

When the Gordon Hartman Family Foundation decided to develop two huge, adjoining projects in San Antonio in 2009, it sought IT assistance from Internet Contrasts, a San Antonio-based VAR.

The two projects, developed simultaneously, were the South Texas Area Regional (STAR) soccer complex and Morgan's Wonderland, the world's first ultra-accessible family fun park for people with disabilities.

The projects sprawl over 108 acres, with 40 devoted to soccer and 26 to the park, and were named after Gordon Hartman's daughter, Morgan, who suffers from cognitive disabilities. All proceeds from STAR subsidize free admission to Morgan's Wonderland for individuals with special needs.

Internet Contrasts was an obvious choice for IT expertise as it had recently finished a state-of-the-art green IT room for Hartman's former construction business. The room was small, energy-efficient and buzzing with the sound of high-capacity blade servers.read more +

High-tech amusement park
keeps special-needs guests connected

Delivering uninterrupted wireless coverage throughout a 25-acre park wasn't easy, but it's necessary to help keep the guests at Morgan's Wonderland safe. The San Antonio, Texas, theme park, which just kicked off its second season, hosts thousands of special-needs children, adults and their families. Each guest wears an RFID wristband that not only tracks their location in the park but also links to critical personal information, such as medical conditions and allergies.

"Throughout the park there are RFID readers that are positioned to provide an in-house GPS," says Brandon Zumwalt, president of Internet Contrasts, a systems integrator that partnered with Morgan's Wonderland to design and build the park's IT infrastructure. Visitors can scan their wristbands at one of the park's five kiosks and find out where a missing member of their party is, for instance, or locate a particular exhibit, or leave messages for people in their group.read more +
