A Whole New World Event

Representatives from 32 San Antonio businesses were among the guests gathered on October 6, 2011 at Morgan's Wonderland for a technology event hosted by Internet Contrasts. Internet Contrasts provided all IT infrastructure for Morgan's Wonderland and currently maintains their technology.

As guests entered, they were each given a RFID tag to wear in order to maximize their technology experience. RFID tags are a special technology utilized at Morgan's Wonderland that tracks the person in the park. They also contain personal information such as allergies or medications. A more entertaining function of the RFID tags is that they allow a guest to email a picture or message to themselves from the park. Many of Internet Contrasts guests experimented with this during their tour of Sensory Village. Among other attractions, Sensory Village hosts a Weather Station and Build A Car Station. read more +

Internet Contrasts and Alcatel-Lucent
help "kids of all ages" at Morgan's Wonderland

Alcatel-Lucent's switches enabled Morgan's Wonderland to achieve this comprehensive coverage while keeping both construction and operating costs down and delivering excellent network fault-tolerance, by allowing Internet Contrasts to install an Ethernet ring protection network rather than traditional hub-and-spoke cabling, based on a ring of twelve strands of fiber laid around the park.

"We sought bids for the fiber install for both traditional hub-and-spoke and Ethernet ring protection topologies. The hub-andspoke configuration would have cost $750,000 compared with around $200,000 for the Ethernet ring protection configuration," Zumwalt says. "We were able to save half a million dollars just in fiber and labor by using Alcatel-Lucent switches." Making use of Ethernet ring protection has also allowed Internet Contrasts to create a fault-tolerant network that delivers excellent uptime. "If the park suffers a cut in its fiber line or a switch needs to be taken down for maintenance, the park's data and voice traffic still flows around the other side of the ring," Zumwalt explains. "The systems suffer no packet loss and there's no interruption of service to end users. All the phones, alarm systems, lighting controls, park exhibits, cameras: everything stays up without any degradation of service." read more +

Morgan's Wonderland Amusement Park

Don't ever let it be said that relationships don't matter. Internet Constrasts won the park project because it had done some previous work for the park's developer, who was a home builder and had started several other profit and non-profit organizations himself, Zumwalt said. "Someone on his advisory council asked us to take a look at what they were [planning]. They were having issues with distance and they needed a network. They didn't understand the distance problems with Ethernet. We looked at their site plan, got rough estimates and told them they needed fiber optics to go from Point A to Point B."read more +
